By the time Lore gently shakes me awake, his hand on my arm while I snore on his shoulder, the sun is at its highest point in the sky.

From what I can see, anyway. We’re in the middle of the forest, just like I’d feared, and the buses are outside of a large house that’s seen better days. Lavena, her friend, and two other wardens stand in front of the doors, and as we all hop off of the buses, I blink around at the trees, my sleepy gaze still a little unfocused.

But not unfocused enough to be able to not notice the strange twinkling in the air. The space between the branches seems to shimmer, and when I follow the lines of it, I swear I can see someone walking through the trees, passing unhurriedly behind a trunk, only to emerge on the other side.

Only…they’re veiled somehow. I squint, turning fully to stare at what looks like a person that I can’t quite see well enough. Are they going behind the house? That seems like the path they’re taking, from what I can tell. But more than that….

My thoughts trail to a stop when I blink and realize the figure is unmoving. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear that they were looking at me, but I still can’t figure out why it’s so hard to see them.

Better turn around and pay attention. The voice is a whisper in my mind, somehow filled with amusement even though it’s barely more than a static-filled murmur.

Who are you? I respond, trying my best at my own far-speak.

The person doesn’t answer.

“Sen!” Lore shakes my arm again, and I whirl around to see both Lavena and her male companion staring straight at me. Shit, shit.

“Something in the trees, Graves?” she asks, drawing the attention of everyone gathered straight to me.

I give her my best, wide-eyed look and shake my head. “I just…haven’t seen woods this thick in a while. Thought I heard a bear,” I shrug.

She smirks, and beside her, the man’s eyes glimmer.

One of the other wardens, an older woman, scowls and picks up with what she was saying before everyone’s attention was on me.

When Lavena looks away, I dare a glance back towards the trees, looking for any sign of the magic or the person there.

Only, I can’t find anything other than trees and fog.

“We’ll be here for two days,” the older warden says, leaning heavily on a cane. I straighten to pay attention, and luckily that’s when she chooses to scowl at me instead of seeing me look away. “Tonight, you’ll face little tests. Far-speak. Small displays of your magic. We want to make sure you’ve been listening. Tomorrow is the big test.”

When she doesn’t continue right away, whispers break out among the forty-odd initiates in the driveway.

“What’s the big test?” Lir asks from where he stands on the opposite side of the sidewalk from me.

“We’re going to give you what amounts to a test mission. Your performance on it won’t be graded exactly.
